I read about half of that link and just couldn't take any more. Every time I have to open an app in iOS to get one piece of information that a widget could have given me at a glance, I am annoyed. *Annoyed. *As for battery life, I see the new Motorola Razr will have a 12.5-hour talk time. And, uh, I think it runs Android. It ain't the widgets running down people's batteries. I continue to think the "whole package" argument is fair when all I'm talking about is _OS_. For a while, iPhone really was the best hardware around, bar none for a touchscreen phone. But even that has passed.

Media management is poor on Android? Well, if you mean there isn't a big poorly lit prison hallway that only allows you to walk from one ward to the other -- iTunes -- then yes, that's true. ITunes is an abomination in more ways than I can count -- bloated, slow, outdated, hampered, crashy, monopolizing. iTunes cannot in a sane universe be considered an effective means of managing one's media.

A lot of this person's argument just comes to down to not believing Android is as pretty as iOS. And I would agree...and I'm glad. iOS reminds me of airport kiosks--lowest common denominator. Childish. Condescending. I don't find it pretty--I find it simple. It is admirably simple.

But I just don't like it, and no one's going to make me! <stamps feet="" here="">

Re: Android still better than Apple’s iOS 5 in fit and finish (at least in some ways)

Ultimately, though, all anyone should do is pick what's best for them. If you prefer Android over iOS, then that's what you should use.

Re: Android still better than Apple’s iOS 5 in fit and finish (at least in some ways)

Well, the link in the post went to a previous post with more examples that I didn't want to rehash. But I did provide new ones (e.g., the notifications and the the alarms) and was making the point that the previous examples had not by and large been addressed in the new iOS version. In addition, I've only ever said that Android's fit and finish was better *in some particulars *. That presumes that iOS is better in fit and finish in other regards.
I don't think Android's the best, either. I remain agnostic. I wish an actual open-source OS would have happened. I would suffer quite a bit to have an open-source option. Nokia had a couple of gos, kind of, at that in the past. I joked at one point that we should start a Kickstarter project to bid on WebOS so we could have an uncorrupted OS to use. But as is, we're stuck with a bunch of less-than-perfect ones.

I agree it's a belief. I'm just tired of Apple people telling me their OSs are provably superior and aren't a matter of faith and that Steve Jobs was something more than a phenomenally talented huckster.

Re: Android still better than Apple’s iOS 5 in fit and finish (at least in some ways)

Well, you should read this: http://dinnerwithandroid.tu...

An iPhone user spent four months with an Android phone and wrote an article explaining why he prefers iOS.

I will agree with you that the management of the new notifications are quite overwhelming in iOS 5. However, I don't think Android is the best, webOS is.

Also, saying that when others think the Mac and iPhone have better "fit and finish" (or whatever you want to call it) it is a "belief", but when you think otherwise it's from your "experience" is weak. I could just as easily say that from my experience the Mac and iPhone are more polished and have better designed UX, and that no one's "belief" to the contrary will change what I've seen with my own eyes. Either statement is useless without giving examples that can be compared and discussed—something you did not do in your post.

Re: Android still better than Apple’s iOS 5 in fit and finish (at least in some ways)

I would have had to think "oh, maybe this setting that says 'mute' doesn't actually mute everything" and then experimented to discover it. When in fact, on the iPod Touch, it turns out not to work this way anyway. Android is explicit about what you're choosing. iOS assumes you'll "get it." OSs are like jokes...if you've got to explain them...

Also, it turns out that Android has another advantage, then--an alarm you can actually mute. iOS? Better remember to turn it off before that last-minute meeting.

As for Safari, have confirmed similar experiences with a friend who happens to be a big Apple fan.

I know this brings out a lot of emotion for people. All I'm asking is for a little reality in our evaluations of these things. Android and iOS each have pros and cons. People are going to have a hard time talking me out of my personal experience.

Re: Android still better than Apple’s iOS 5 in fit and finish (at least in some ways)

What do you mean how would you ever have figured that out? You specifically said: "Yes, I can mute the device, solving that problem, but then my alarm clock won’t work." as if you had "figured out" the exact opposite of how it really works. So apparently you have an iPhone and have tested it, but for some reason you think muting the phone mutes the alarm. It doesn't.

If your Safari browser crashed all the time, there must have been something out of the ordinary that was wrong. That's not a common thing at all.

Re: Android still better than Apple’s iOS 5 in fit and finish (at least in some ways)

Disqus generic email template Just tried this on an iPod touch -- didn't work.
